Sri Lanka Post exceeds 2025 revenue target, earns Rs. 13.1 bn

Sri Lanka’s postal service has recorded a significant turnaround in 2025, surpassing revenue targets set by the Treasury and marking what officials describe as a major revival after years of stagnation.
Postmaster General Ruwan Sathkumara said the Department of Posts exceeded the revenue target assigned for 2025, generating income of Rs. 13.1 billion, above expectations set by the Treasury.
He said the past year also saw wide-ranging reforms, including large-scale recruitments, confirmations of long-serving staff, infrastructure development and investments in technology and transport aimed at improving efficiency and service delivery.
According to the Postmaster General, 378 Sub-Postmasters were granted permanent appointments in June 2025, marking the first such confirmations since 2020. In addition, the appointments of 1,000 Postal Assistants were regularised in September 2025, the first confirmations for that category since 2022.
He added that recruitment processes are underway to hire 600 Postal Service Officers through open competition, with appointments expected in February this year. Meanwhile, 40 Grade III postal driver positions were filled in November 2025, the first such appointments since 2018.
Following approval granted by the Cabinet at the request of Health and Mass Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, steps were also taken to recruit 1,000 Postal Assistants to address long-standing vacancies. Of these, 731 individuals who had been registered as substitute employees and met the required qualifications were recruited last year, officials said.
To modernise postal operations, the department purchased 225 computers, 1,500 tablet devices for Sub-Postmasters, 500 printers and 32 laser printers during 2025. Investments were also made to upgrade transport facilities, with 10 new large lorries and 20 new cab vehicles set to be deployed for postal transport.
The Postmaster General said procurement has begun for 20 electric cargo three-wheelers and 165 electric motorcycles using $500,000 provided under the QSF fund. In addition, a $100,000 grant from the United States Postal Service (USPS) will be used to purchase 15 electric cargo three-wheelers. The government is also due to allocate 21 cab vehicles to the postal department, which has not purchased vehicles since 2018.
On infrastructure development, he said the government allocated Rs. 600 million at the beginning of 2025 for the construction of new post office buildings. Construction has commenced at 14 locations, including the Dambulla Regional Mail Exchange. Projects have also begun at the Nuwara Eliya Unique View Tourist Bungalow, the Unique View official quarters, the Nuwara Eliya Regional Postal Superintendent’s office and associated facilities.
The new Polonnaruwa Post Office was handed over to the public last year, while solar panel installations have been completed at several key locations, including the Postal Headquarters, Central Mail Exchange, Polonnaruwa Postal Complex and Batticaloa Postal Complex. (Newswire)
