Sri Lanka receives USD 800 mn FDI so far -Minister Amunugama
Over 20 organizations given approval to start projects in port city
“One Village One Product” project in 14,000 Grama Seva divisions
Sri Lanka has attracted around USD 800 million, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) , said State Minister of Finance Dilum Amunugama yesterday in Colombo. He said the target was USD 1 billion for the entire year and this is praise worthy achievement.
“Also, out of the 118 land plots in the port city, 46 land plots have been given to the Chinese contract company. Out of that, six plots of land have been given back to Sri Lankan companies.”
“I am happy to announce that 21 organizations have been approved to start projects in the port city. We are working to bring more investments in the future. It is also planned to develop the Pelwatte Sugar Factory. All these investments have the potential to further strengthen Sri Lanka’s economy.”
The Sri Lanka Board of Investment provides facilities for 15 investment zones and 1,575 companies are currently operating in those investment zones and over 500,000 employed in them. He also disclosed that seven new investment zones have been planned to be established under the new investment program of the current government. These new investment zones will be set up in Mankulam, Paranthan, Kankesanthurai, Trincomalee, Iranawila, Hambantota and Bingiriya.
“Most of these FDI pledges will be implemented in these zones. We also plan to promote the Kankesanthurai Investment Zone as a Canadian and Sri Lankan investment zone.”
In addition Sri Lanka has also earned USD 9 billion export income in the first six months of 2024. The Minister said new ‘Export Promotion’ projects have already been conducted to increase Sri Lanka’s export income. “One Village One Product” project is expected to be implemented across the country in the future. It is expected to activate 14,000 Grama Seva divisions via this program. Also, “e-commerce” online platform is planned to increase export income.
