Sri Lankan apparel exporters will soon have to obtain Net-Zero Carbon status for their manufacturing facilities, said University of Moratuwa, Professor Ajith De Alwis.

He said that as designated by the Paris Agreement of the United Nations this would be an international requirement. “Without having this Net-Zero Carbon status, international buyers would be reluctant to place orders with suppliers who do not comply with this.”

He said that Brandix has taken a right step towards this and have already obtained this certification for six facilities from their total number of 17 in Sri Lanka. Creating a landmark, on the World Environment Day, Brandix (Apparels) announced that they have achieved Net-Zero Carbon status in five production facilities. At a special event to announce this at Brandix Essentials Koggala, Group Director Natasha Borelessa said that they hope to have this certification for all their remaining factories in Sri Lanka by 2023.

“According to the Paris Agreement of the United Nations, other establishments aim to achieve Net-Zero Carbon status by 2050. All of Brandix’s factories are making Net-Zero Carbon into ‘purely carbon-free’ establishments and we plan to achieve this by 2030 twenty years before schedule. Brandix was also the first Net-Zero Carbon certified green clothing factory in the world and this is a great pride for all of us.

“Brandix has been working together for 15 years to overcome the challenge and have installed Solar Panels for our facilities, reduced the use of plastic polythene and recycled water and done more similar initiatives.”

Brandix was able to become the first green clothing factory in the world to receive the internationally recognized LEED Platinum Award for its environmentally friendly activities.
