A Sri Lankan youth who had attempted to travel to Canada using a forged tourist visa and passport, acquired for Rs. 4 million, was arrested at the Katunayake Airport on Sunday (10) evening.

The youth had arrived at Katunayake Airport attempting to travel to Canada via Doha, Qatar, but had been arrested by airport officials after suspicions had arisen over his Canadian visa documents.

Immigration and Emigration officials at the airport said that the youth was handed over to the Border Surveillance Unit at which point it was revealed that his Canadian visa permit was found to be forged.

While searching the suspect’s luggage, the officials were able to retrieve his original Sri Lankan passport.

Police investigations have revealed that the 25-year-old suspect, a resident of Point Pedro in Jaffna, had purchased the passport from a person near the 18th milepost on the Katunayake – Colombo main road before arriving at the airport.

The suspect had informed Immigration and Emigration officials that he had purchased the forged Canadian visa and passport through money that had been sent by his uncle living in Switzerland.

Later, the suspect had been handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department at the Katunayake Airport to conduct further investigations.
