SSC employee remanded for theft of member’s credit card

Colombo Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alwis ordered yesterday (15) that an employee of the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) who had  been taken into custody by the Cinnamon Gardens Police in respect of an incident where Rs. 20,000 worth of fairness cream had been purchased by him using a credit card that he had found, fallen inside the club, be remanded till March 20.

The police informed the court that the young man had said in a statement he made that he had bought this fairness cream because his wife is fair and he too wanted to become fair similar to that, had also said that he picked up this credit card while it was lying on the floor of the club. The complaint states that this credit card belongs to Ranil Wijesinha, a chartered accountant, and that it was misplaced on February 26 and that he did not know how it went missing.

Later, the owner of the card had lodged a complaint with the Cinnamon Gardens Police that he received a receipt on his mobile phone related to the purchase of fairness cream purchased from a shop in Kirulapona. After checking CCTV footage of the said shop, the complainant had identified the suspect as the person who works at the SSC. Accordingly, the suspect a resident of Ja-ela, was arrested by police and produced in court. The police had reported to the court that the suspect was guilty of offences punishable under Section 367, 386 of the Penal Code and Section 30(1) of the Payment and Fraud Schemes Act No. 30 of 2006.
