Kegalle District Assistant Director of the Disaster Management Unit Anushka Chamila said that due to the risk of a mound of earth collapsing, arrangements were made to temporarily close the primary section of St. Joseph’s Girls’ College, Kegalle from yesterday (02) indefinitely, until a temporary toilet system is constructed.

The primary section of Kegalle St. Joseph’s Girl’’ College is located about 500 metres away from the main college, near Kegalle New Alternative Road. More than 1,000 girls are educated in the primary section, which runs classes from the first grade to the fifth grade, and about 60 teachers and non-educational staff work there.

This primary section is nestled on a mountain ridge and the Kegalle Municipal Crematorium is also located above the school. On September 29, at around 1.30 pm, a pile of earth had collapsed next to the place where the upper building is located, and as a result, arrangements were made to close the school temporarily.

Yesterday, Kegalle District Assistant Director of Disaster Management Unit Anushka Chamila, Kegalle District Chief Geologist Nimali Weerasinghe, Kegalle St. Joseph Girls’ School Deputy Principal R. Jayasiri, Primary Department Assistant Principal Chamari Amarakeerthi and a group of others visited and observed the place where the mound of earth had collapsed.

Anushka Chamila said that the school will have to be temporarily closed for a few days from yesterday until the collapsed pile of earth is removed by the soldiers of the Army training camp in Kegalle Beragala and repairs are done and a temporary toilet system is built instead of the toilet system located nearby.
