State employees to get remaining Rs. 5,000 of Rs. 10,000 allowance before April 10

State Minister for Finance Dr. Ranjith Siyambalapitiya announced that the full Rs. 10,000 allowance increase to public servants in the 2024 Budget will be added to the April salary.
The Minister said that after paying the salaries of all government employees in the month of March, the salary for the month of April will be paid before April 10 in view of the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
Of the Rs. 10,000 proposed in the 2024 Budget, Rs. 5,000 is currently given for public servants.
Dr. Siyambalapitiya said that the balance Rs. 5,000 will be paid from April. Therefore, the full Rs. 10,000 increase will be added to the salary from April onwards. He also said that 2.8 million low-income families will be given 10 kilos of rice each in April and May free of charge.
The Minister also said that it currently costs Rs. 100,000 million annually to pay salaries to government employees and with the increase of Rs. 5,000 from April, the Government will have to bear an additional amount of Rs. 13,000 million to Rs. 14,000 million.
Also, the Rs. 2,500 promised for pensioners in the Budget too will be given to them from April, he added.
