A project to study bird behaviour and collect data using GPS technology, a first in Sri Lanka, has been jointly initiated by the Department of Zoology of the University of Colombo and Central Provincial Environment Organizations collective.
Launching the project a two-year-old eagle was attached with a GPS collar and released near the historical Gannoruwa forest in Kandy recently.
Many ecologists are contributing to this project under the guidance and supervision of Prof.Sampath Seneviratne of the Colombo University’s Zoology Department and Central Province Environment Organization Collective President Environmental Scientist Pradeep Samarawickrema.
Samarawickrema said that at present GPS collars are connected to animals like elephants, tigers and bears in Sri Lanka to collect information, but this is the first time that such a device has been connected to an eagle in Sri Lanka.
Samarawickrama said that since it has a solar panel, the battery of this device is charged with the sunlight and all the data such as the distance the animal flies in the sky, the height, the depth of the dive in the water can be collected through this.
