Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne addressing Parliament staff on New Year’s Day.
Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, participating in the ceremonial commencement of Parliamentary duties for the year 2025, emphasised on Wednesday (01) at the Parliament premises that building a more exemplary Parliament that fulfills the aspirations of the people requires the support of everyone.
Commending the contributions of the Parliament staff given the arrival of a significant number of new Members of Parliament, the Speaker highlighted the need to establish a Parliament with a unique identity at both national and international levels.
He further stressed that Parliament holds a profound responsibility to meet public expectations and should incorporate values into its vision and mission while enhancing attributes such as transparency and efficiency in its operations. Deputy Chair Person of Committees, Hemali Weerasekara, speaking on the occasion, remarked that 2025 is poised to be a transformative year for the country, placing a great responsibility on everyone to meet the aspirations of the people.
Expressing her gratitude to the Parliament staff for their dedicated service thus far, Weerasekara emphasised the critical importance of the roles performed by all individuals serving in Parliament, the nation’s apex institution. She extended her best wishes for the New Year, underscoring the necessity of delivering more efficient services with a positive outlook to enhance Sri Lanka’s standing globally.
Parliament Secretary-General Kushani Rohanadeera expressed her gratitude to the Parliament staff for their commitment to providing a strong start to the Tenth Parliament, following the Presidential and General Elections held in 2024. She acknowledged the efforts made to facilitate the necessary resources and support for Members of Parliament and extended her wishes for the new year.
The Secretary-General highlighted that Sri Lanka’s Parliament is privileged to have a highly skilled and dedicated staff, selected through competitive examinations and interviews, and expressed confidence in their continued dedication in the future.
Furthermore, Rohanadeera expressed her gratitude to all staff and affiliated staff for providing exceptional service to foreign delegations, dignitaries, and the thousands of schoolchildren who visit Parliament daily apart from supporting all Members of Parliament in the execution of their duties. She also commended the Sri Lanka Police and other Security Forces for their indispensable role in ensuring safety and contributing to these operations.
Subsequently, the Parliamentary staff joined the live telecast of the national ceremony launching the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ programme organised by the Presidential Secretariat. During the event, participants took the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ civic pledge, reaffirming their commitment to the initiative.
Chief of Staff and Deputy Secretary-General Chaminda Kularatne, Assistant Secretary-General Hansa Abeyratne, heads of departments, and members of the Parliament staff and affiliated staff were present.
