A person from Ampitiya who was in possession of 400,000 cigarettes imported without a licence was arrested by a team of officers from the Panadura Walana anti-corruption unit and handed over to the anti-corruption unit of the Kandy Police headquarters for further investigation.
When the suspect was produced before Kandy Additional Magistrate Mohammad Rafi, he admitted his guilt.
Accordingly, the Additional Magistrate imposed a fine of Rs.100,000 on the suspect and informed him that if the fine was not paid, he will be punished with hard labour for one year.
