Sylvestrians clinch Stubbs Shield

St Sylvester’s College led by Heshantha Jayasinghe won the106th Stubbs Shield All Island Schools Boxing Championship for the 17th time. The meet featured a total of over 21 weight categories and the numbers of boxers were over 300 in this meet. the second place was taken by Kaduganawa National school they won two gold, one silver and three bronze medals and Trinity College took the third place with two gold, and two bronze. In the girls meet Hemamali Balika Vidyalaya took the second place.

St Sylvester’s College led by Heshantha Jayasinghe won the 106th Stubbs Shield All Island Schools Boxing Championship for the 17th time. This meet was held at the Royal College MAS Arena organized by the Schools Boxing Association of Sri Lanka… St. Sylvester’s at one time was in the forefront of schools boxing, winning the coveted Stubbs Shield several times (within 14 years they won it on 12 occasions in early days). This time they gave a good display to win four gold medals by A.G.V.H. Jayasinghe,M.M Paris, M.A. Rahuman, M. Saheed, two silver medal winners were S.P.P.Angelo, Chalaka Kumara and bronze medal winner M. Mujayith and the best loser of the meet was S.P.P. Angelo. A big hand should go to the two coaches Bandulla Vithana Gamage who is a Chief Inspector of Police and Jamitha Bandara and also MICS. Shiva.

Hemamali BMV who took the second place in the girls meet, with two gold medals and their star boxer H.M. Nethmi Hearth was the best boxer in the girls event.

Anuhas to lead Trinity

Anuhas Kodithuwakku has been named to captain Trinity College rugger team in the 2024 season, which will be his fourth year of play. He is an intelligent back division player who can fit in as fly half, centre and full back and he is also a good goal kicker.This young ruggerite started his rugby career at junior level and now has reached the senior. He is also a good athlete. He will be blessed with two vice captains Thisanga Dissanayke and Ravin Ilangaratne. The Trinitians are expected to start their practices in November this year, there are over forty ruggerites in the list. In the coming season too, coaching will be headed by the well experienced former National Rugby Captain Fazil Marija.

Trinity College, which started playing rugby way back in 1906, at one time was known as the cradle of rugby. It is said that Trinity take to rugby like ducks taking to water. They not only have produced several champion teams, but have also provided the national team with top players. The principal Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara and the Old Trinitians Rugby Scrummage headed by Nilantha Ratnayake gives their best support for the game

Senaka to coach Rajans

The vastly experienced Senaka Dissanayke, has taken back coaching at his school where he learnt the game DharmarajaCollege. He has coached Dharmaraja College juniors and seniors from 2005 to 2017, Azhar College Akurana from 2018 to 2020 , and also overseas. In the last few years He was the coach of Vidyartha College from 2021.

During his playing days at Dharmaraja he was a batsman with good strokes, and scored a double century in the year1984 in the ‘Big Match’ against Kingswood College. He led the under 17cricket team in 1981 and later played from 1982 to 1984 for 1st XI side. During his school days he scored198 against Nalanda College and 119 against Zahira College, 100 against St. Thomas’ College Matale and 105 against S. Thomas’ Mount Lavinia. Her also played for the under 19 Schools National team and toured Australia in 1984 under the leadership of Aravinda de Silva.
