Pakistan has paused its preparations for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 amid growing uncertainty over Bangladesh’s participation, according to sources quoted by Geo News.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reportedly instructed team management to halt World Cup-related planning and prepare contingency options in the event Pakistan decides not to participate in the tournament, scheduled to be held in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8.
Pakistan has expressed full support for Bangladesh’s reluctance to travel to India, with officials describing Dhaka’s security concerns as reasonable and valid. Sources said Pakistan will reconsider its own participation if the issue surrounding Bangladesh remains unresolved.
Meanwhile, the ICC has informed the Bangladesh Cricket Board that a final decision on travel to India must be taken by January 21. The ICC has also indicated that if Bangladesh ultimately opts not to travel, a replacement team will be named for the tournament. Based on current ICC rankings, Scotland are next in line to take Bangladesh’s place.
The PCB has further conveyed its willingness to host Bangladesh’s matches in Pakistan if Sri Lankan venues are unavailable, highlighting Pakistan’s recent track record in successfully staging major ICC events, including the Champions Trophy 2025.
The situation remains under discussion, with the ICC maintaining that the tournament schedule will remain unchanged while awaiting Bangladesh’s final decision. (Newswire)
