State Minister of Finance Dr. Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said that he has submitted a summary report to Parliament on the steps to be taken to recover tax arrears that exceeds Rs. 1,000 billion.

Addressing the media, the State Minister said that despite accusations that the responsible officials have failed to collect revenue due to the state, institutions such as the Inland Revenue Department, Customs, etc. have exceeded the revenue target so far this year.

He also pointed out that although it is true that such mistakes are made by certain officers and individuals, the officers as a whole have fulfilled their responsibility.

However, the State Minister said that there are reasonable grounds for the occurrence of such arrears of taxes and the tax appeal process as well as the amount of taxes to be paid by public institutions too contributes to such anomalies. Accordingly, the State Minister said he has submitted a report to Parliament on the steps that can be taken to speed up the existing judicial system to recover these tax arrears and the steps that can be taken to collect the amount of tax due from government institutions or to remove them.

The State Minister, who said that some tax arrears are deficits that have existed for about 25 years, added that he had submitted to Parliament the summary note on a scientific method of finding answers to these problems.

He also said a more detailed report will be submitted to Parliament in the future.
