The Agriculture and Plantation Industries Ministry decided yesterday (29) to increase the subsidy of tea fertiliser to Rs. 4,000. At present, the annual production of tea in our country has decreased to 260 million metric tons and it has been targeted to increase the amount to 300 million metric tons.
Earlier, it was decided to give a tea fertiliser subsidy of Rs. 2,000 to encourage the growers to apply fertilisers to tea cultivation, but it has been found that the amount is not enough to increase the production of tea annually.m
Because of this, Agriculture and Plantation Industries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera instructed the Ministry Secretary Janaka Dharmakeerthi to take steps to increase the tea fertiliser subsidy to Rs. 4,000.
Accordingly, this fertilizer subsidy will be provided from the coming Maha season and currently the State Fertilizer Company will reduce the price of tea fertiliser of Rs. 2,000 by another Rs. 2,000.
Rs. 2 billion will be spent for this subsidy and it is planned to provide that amount through the funds of Ceylon Tea Board. The Cabinet paper for this was to be presented to the Cabinet yesterday (29) by Minister Amaraweera.
