Teenager remanded for social media post on President

Colombo Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alwis yesterday ordered a young suspect  who was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and presented to the Court for a post on social media asking for a sniper weapon to kill the President, be remanded until September 8.

The suspect Uditha Madhubhashana has a mobile bakery (Choon Paan) business in Eppawala.

The suspect was presented to the Court by the CID under Section 120 of the Penal Code.

The CID stated before the court that an investigation was conducted according to a complaint made by the Inspector General of Police and that the suspect was arrested on Sunday (3) in Anuradhapura.

The lawyer who appeared for the suspect stated before the Court that the suspect is 19 years old and that he did this without knowing the seriousness of the offence.

The lawyer further said that the suspect, who was addicted to video games, knew what a sniper was but he did not know the seriousness of this offence and that he had a good knowledge of computers and mobile phones and was engaged in repairing them.

The suspect has posted this post on social media asking for a weapon to assassinate the President who is going to participate in the 150th anniversary celebration of the Sri Siddhartha National School in Eppawala on September 7.

The Magistrate ordered the suspect to be remanded in custody until September 8, stating that he would consider granting bail after the ceremony.
