Tharushi gets Rs.10 Mn from SLC

Sri Lanka Cricket has decided to provide prize money of Rs. 10 million to Tharushi Karunaratne, who won the Gold in the women’s 800m event in the ongoing 19th Asian Games.

Sri Lanka Cricket senior official confirmed yesterday that this type of donation was given to Sri Lankan sprinter Yupun Abeykoon (50,000 US dollars) earlier after his achievements at Commonwealth Games.

The 19-year-old on Tharushi Karunaratne clocked a time of 2.03.20 minutes in women’s 800m event to clinch the Gold medal at the continental multi-sport event being held in Hangzhou, China and this gold medal for Sri Lanka after 21 years .

SLC commended Tharushi Karunarathna for her arduous yet persistent efforts and for making history .The product of Walala A Rathnayake MMV did extremely well to win another bronze medal at women’s 4x 400 m relay on the same day on Wednesday.

Earlier, Tharushi Karunaratne the current 800 m record holder set an Asian record and a national record at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championship held in Bangkok, Thailand, finishing the event with a time of 2:00:06 minutes.

Karunaratne holds the record for both 400m and 800m events at the All-Island School Games 2019 while being the Gold medalist for both events. She also holds the record for the 800m at the Sir John Tarbet Senior Championships 2019 and is the Gold medalist for both the 400m and 800m events. She was awarded the best female athlete under 16 award at the provincial meet in 2019.

Meanwhile, President Ranil Wickremesinghe has conveyed his heartfelt congratulations to the young sprinter, during a telephone conversation. He emphasized that the entire nation takes immense pride in her remarkable international achievement, the President’s Media Division (PMD) said yesterday.

In addition Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe also congratulated to young Tharushi Karunaratne over the phone as soon as she won the gold medal.Sports Minister already promised to give 150 lakhs for Asian Games Gold medal ,100 lakhs for silver medal and 50 lakhs for bronze medal while medal winning athlete’s coach will receive 25 percent prize money from athletes cash award.
