The Heat is On!

The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning about hot weather conditions for several districts where the heat could increase up to 39-45 ‘Caution’ level of the heat index today (22).

Accordingly, the heat felt by the human body at some places in the North-Western Province and Gampaha, Colombo, Hambantota and Moneragala districts could increase to a ‘Caution’ level where fatigue is possible with prolonged exposure and activity and continued activity could result in heat cramps that requires special attention today (22). The Meteorological Department advised that people should drink adequate water and stay as much as possible in the shaded areas of the open work sites.

Attention should be paid especially to the elderly and sick people living inside homes and also to ensure not to keep small children alone inside closed vehicles.

The Meteorological Department also advised to wear white or light coloured clothing whenever possible.
