A group of 35 Sri Lankan domestic workers who had overstayed their visas were deported to Katunayake Airport Yesterday (29) morning. There were 33 female and 02 male workers in this group.
Among them were those whose employers had refused to renew their visas to allow them to remain in Kuwait and another group whose passports were not returned to them by their employers.
The Embassy of Sri Lanka in the State of Kuwait had discussed with the Ministry of Interior and Immigration Department officials and taken steps to clear this group.
Additionally, some of the maids had charges filed against them in Kuwaiti courts, while some cases were erroneously filed by their employers. The Sri Lankan Embassy assisted with the required legal support for all of these cases and intervened in the settlement process. Also, the Embassy of Sri Lanka had intervened to get the final benefits and arrears of salaries for some employees.
The embassy had taken measures to prepare temporary passports for the workers who did not have passports and to provide tickets for those who did not have plane tickets. In this way, 3,450 people who are staying in Kuwait without valid visas are registered in the embassy to come to Sri Lanka said a spokesperson of the Sri Lanka Embassy.
The spokesman added that they are negotiating with the authorities of the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Kuwait and Sri Lanka and the authorities of the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau to use charter flights to send this group to Sri Lanka as soon as possible.
He further said that another similar group of 35 domestic workers who are staying in Kuwait without visas will arrive in Sri Lanka on December 03.
