Mattakkuliya Police yesterday said that a mother, her daughter and another person were arrested yesterday (31) after they forcibly detained a postman of the Kotahena Post Office inside a house, assaulted him and tried to rob him of money.
This incident has taken place when the postman had gone to a house at Church road, Colombo 15 to hand over a parcel received to the post office in favour of the householder.
The postman had gone to the house with another postman in a three-wheeler and handed over the parcel to a girl at the house and got Rs.3,500 for the parcel. When they were returning from the house, the woman had given a telephone call and brought the peon to the house, closed the door, beat him and threatened him demanding the money given for the parcel back.
It was revealed during the investigations that the suspect woman had also brought a person who lives in the adjacent house for that purpose.
The postman has told woman that he had given the money to his friend who came with him in three wheeler. However he had escaped and returned to the post office.
Employees of the Kotahena Post Office stayed away from duties yesterday from 7 am to 10.30 am in protest of the incident. However, they resumed duties after the suspects were arrested yesterday afternoon.The suspects were to be produced before the magistrate yesterday evening.
