Three arrested for smuggling gold from Chennai

The Katunayake Airport’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested three passengers including two women along with 315 grams of gold worth over Rs.6 million brought in illegally.

The thee passengers had arrived from Chennai, India were arrested on Thursday (23) by CID officers. Investigations have revealed that these suspects, who were caught trying to smuggle in gold, at the airport premises without paying duty, are engaged in various business activities and other

rackets between India and Sri Lanka.

The CID said that these two women residents of Mahara and Biyanwila are are 37 and 35.

The third is a 31-year-old resident of Vauxhall Street, Colombo 2. They were to be handed over to the Customs for legal proceedings.
