A suspected boyfriend who was arrested on suspicion of sexually abusing a 15-year old girl together with a bus driver and a conductor who allegedly aided and abetted the offence were released on bail.
Kurunegala Chief Magistrate Bandula Gunaratne ordered to release them on strict bail conditions. The suspects were remanded for 24 days on court orders. A 15-year-old girl who was going home after school was sexually abused in a bus travelling from Kurunegala to Kumbukgate.
The Chief Magistrate, who set bail for the suspects separately in the amount of ten thousand rupees each, additionally ordered two personal sureties worth Rs. 100,000. The Chief Magistrate further ordered the suspects to report to the Children and Women’s Bureau of Kumbukgate Police on last Sunday of every month, and also to appear before court on January 11.
This order was made taking into consideration a lengthy presentation made by attorney Keerthi Dunusinghe to court regarding bail of these suspects. The suspects Hashan Priyanjith Nandana of Kurunegala Road Kumbukgate, Nuwan Kumara Premaratne of Nelliya Velgala, Kurunegala, a private bus driver and Kavidu Kavisha of Vasanagama,Periyakadulawa, the conductor were released on bail.
When Police asked court to further remand the suspects,attorney Keerthi Dunusinghe said that the first suspect is the boyfriend of the 15-year-old girl who complained.The attorney told court that the second suspect was driving the bus at the time of the alleged incident and the third suspect was issuing tickets to passengers as the conductor.
