Health and Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa announced yesterday that the Government had decided to modernise and develop the Thriposha Company in Kandana, operating under the Health and Media Ministry and continue it as a State-owned enterprise to fulfill the nutritional needs of the nation.
The Minister revealed this decision during a discussion held on Saturday (4) with officials to review the current status and future development plans of the Thriposha Company.
Minister Jayatissa highlighted that previous Governments failed to implement structured and goal-oriented strategies to maximise benefits of this vital national enterprise for the public. He stated that the current Government is committed to reviving Thriposha Company as an active institution addressing the nutritional needs of Sri Lankans, reversing previous plans to shut it down.
During the visit, the Minister inspected the company’s raw material storage, production processes, machinery, packaging operations, quality management, and new product development. He also held extensive discussions with the board of directors, management, and staff, addressing operational challenges, future development plans, production capacity enhancements, and the introduction of new products.
Dr.Jayatissa emphasised the importance of integrating local maize and soybean farmers into Thriposha Comapny’s supply chain by establishing a continuous purchasing mechanism. Highlighting the need for a streamlined distribution system, he pointed out that the supply chain had deteriorated and called for the Health Ministry’s intervention to develop an efficient distribution plan.
The Minister reiterated that, instead of discontinuing the Thriposha Company, the Government aims to transform it into a profitable and sustainable enterprise under a structured development plan that prioritises public welfare and nutrition.
In a significant move, Rs.11 million from Thriposha’s profits of Rs.165 million, exceeding 30% of its earnings for the 2023 financial year, were handed over to the Finance Ministry. The cheque was presented by Minister Jayatissa to State Enterprises Department Deputy Director N.J. Pathirana.
