Thurstan College clinched the Premier Trophy when they outplayed Sri Sumangala College, Kandy 41-21 in the Inter-Schools Under-19 Knock-Out Rugby Tournament final played at Havelock Park yesterday.
The newly crowned Division One Segment ‘B’ League Tournament champions, led from the start to the finish and went on to complete a grand double for the season while collecting their points from four goals, two tries and one penalty.
The Thurstanites made their intentions quite clear from the kick-off and got off to a flying start as they ran down three early tries to build up a commanding 19-0 lead inside the first 20 minutes of play.
However, Sri Sumangala MV stormed back into contention shortly before the break with two back-to-back tries and managed to cut the deficit to 14-22 at half time.
But Thurstan started the second half proceedings just in the manner they began the final by planting two tries inside two minutes to further increase their lead to 34-14 in the 53rd minute.
Sri Sumangala MV pulled one back with their third converted try in the 57th minute before Thurstan sealed the contest by running down their sixth try of the match in the 61st minute.
Chairman’s Trophy final
Meanwhile, St. John’s College, Nugegoda captured the Chairman’s Trophy when they trounced Lalith Athulathmudali College 27-0 in the Knock-Out Tournament final played at Havelock Park.
St. John’s, playing in the Chairman’s Trophy final for the third successive year dominated the game from the kick-off and collected their points from one goal and four tries after having led 10-0 at half time.
Winger Raveen Janith scored two early tries to put his team in control at the break while Ravindu Yasoda crossed the whitewash twice and Chanuka Geesath added one try during a dominant second-half performance.
