Kandy’s cricket lovers are happy for the superb performance of the Trinity College cricket side, which made them the champions of the under 19 inter schools limited over’s Division I tournament Tier “A”.
In the final they beat Richmond College by 41 runs on D/L method. Due to wet condition match got off to a delayed start and was reduced to 41 over’s. Trinity also performed well in October to emerge as champions of the Kandy school Premier League (KSPL) tournament where eight schools took part. In the final Trinity College beat St. Sylvester’s College, by seven wickets. So this year they enjoyed good cricket and won cricket title after long years.
A big hand to the players for playing good cricket. Trinity’s victory in the two finals is great for the school. This is a very special year for them as they are celebrating their 150th anniversary of the school.
Trinity cricket is thriving under the leader ship of Rahal Amarasinghe a fine left hand opening batsman and the Vice Captain was Vibawith Ehelepola a left hand bat and a right arm pace bowler. The team played brilliantly in the present season and became the favorites for the title.
However, for the sake of the sport, entire cricket lovers of present and old boys of Trinity College must be happy with the good effort of the team. Their last win for a title was in 2012 under the captaincy of Niroshan Dickwella, he later became a Sri Lanka cricketer in Test, one day and T 20.
It should be said that Trinity College is one of the oldest cricket playing schools in the country. Before the Second World War, Trinity not only produced several top class cricketers but also produced several invincible teams. Trinity is a school in Kandy which provides all the facilities for the sport. They have a superb indoor net, bowling machine, and an international stadium.
Champion Trinity’s this year’s first round Division I tournament Tier ‘A’ record: beat Royal College by 45 Runs, lost to Prince of Wales College by 4 Wickets, beat St. Anne’s College by two wickets, beat St Thomas College Matara by 6 Wickets, beat St Joseph’s College Colombo by 5 Wickets, beat Nalanda College Colombo by 59 runs, lost to Mahanama College by 6 Wickets and the game against St Benedict’s College – no results.
Then in the Quarter finals they beat St Sebastian’s College by 14 Runs (D/L) and in the semi finals beat their arch rivals St Anthony’s College by two Wickets and clinched the title by beating Richmond College by 41 Runs on (D/L) in the final.
This year’s squad was made out of cricketers like Rahal Amarasinghe (Captain), Vibawth Ehelepola (Vice Captain), Theeraka Ranathunga, Kusal Wijethunga, Tharana Wimaladharma, Manula Kularathne, Dinusha Pieris, Supun Waduge, Dinuka Thennakoon, Jayavi Liyanagama, Janith Warnakula, Malith Rathnayake, Lakwin Abeysinghe, Wathila Udara, Yewan Hulangamuwa, Viduka Dhammage.
The Principal Rev. Fr.Araliya Jayasundara gave his best of support, and also the POG Utthiya Wijesinghe, MIC Brian Senarathne. A big hand should go to head coach, who is a former Trinity cricketer Naveen Ekanayake, Assistant Coaches Lakshitha Alahakoon and Dinusha Jayashantha all three are outstanding coaches, who have learnt a good deal of cricket from their school days.
