Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Imthiaz Bakeer Markar said that there must be a right vision, programme and a talented team to rebuild a collapsed country. It is significant that the right vision, accurate programme and a talented capable team are with the Samagi Jana Sandhana (SJS).

MP Bakeer Markar said this on Wednesday (4) when addressing a media briefing held at the Samagi Jana Sandhana office in Colombo.

He said that the people should work in this election to create an era in which small people become kings without being deceived by the false promises of the government. The trust of all those people has been established in SJS Presidential Candidate Sajith Premadasa. But it is regrettable that the present President does not receive such trust as he couldn’t win the hearts of common masses.

“During the election period, the media is more influential. False information is planted in society these days. It is the duty of the people to sift and understand the truth,” Bakeer Markar said.

“Today there is news that Ranil Wickremesinghe’s group and Sajith Premadasa’s group will join. Samagi Jana Balawegaya is a creation of the United National Party (UNP) itself. The Samagi Jana Balawegaya was created by a unanimous decision of the UNP’s working committee. We have been fighting a difficult struggle in the UNP for many years. As a result of that struggle, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya was created,” he said.

“At a time when the victory of Sajith Premadasa is confirmed by polls surveys, the people should be alert and vigilant about the spreading of false and baseless information.

“We did not have any personal issues with Ranil Wickremesinghe, but only a policy problem. Wickremesinghe worked to take the United National Party to another path away from the people. Wickremesinghe deviated from social democratic policies and directed the UNP to extreme right-wing policies. It is such facts that led us to make this difficult struggle,” he added.

“Wickremesinghe connected the UNP to an extreme right-wing political camp, away from the socialist democratic path. This was done without the approval of party members. Through Wickremesinghe’s process, we have to work on the agendas of the right-wing political camps. We fought against them. And Ranil Wickremesinghe destroyed the internal democracy of the UNP,” he added.

“Since we were unable to work with Wickremesinghe, more than 60 UNP MPs including key figures left the party. Today, the people have determined what the UNP and the legacy of the UNP is. In the last General Election, a new political movement was started under the leadership of Sajith Premadasa,” Bakeer Markar added.

“The people who joined the SJS have agreed to the basic principles of the SJS. There is agreement with the basic policies of the parties that joined the SJS.

“The old leaders of the UNP built their policies on three points. The UNP built alliances based on the three principles of democracy, social justice and unity in diversity. SJB is built on these three pillars. At that time, Dudley Senanayake had the trust of every segment of the population. Today, Sajith Premadasa has been able to gather the trust of all the people unlike the leaders of other main political parties. With Premadasa, many political parties including the political parties of the North and the political parties of the plantation areas have joined hands with him.
