Twelve teams compete at Peterite International Rugby Sevens

Twelve teams will lock horns at the inaugural International under-20 seven-a-side rugby tournament organized by St. Peter’s College, Colombo which will kick off on October 14 and 15 at their home ground in Bambalapitiya.

Celebrating the centenary year after it was inaugurated way back in 1922, one of the pioneer institutions in the country, which has played a pivotal role both in education and sports, St. Peters College has opted to host a Rugby tournament with the participation of 12 teams including four overseas teams – two from Australia and one each from Bahrain and Malaysia.

The organizers initially have extended an invitation to most of the top tier Rugby playing schools and after the deadline six in the top fold and two in the bottom division who subsequently have been promoted to ‘A’ division to compete next season have been included in this tournamnet which will be played in compliance with international standards. This has also got the blessings of the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association and the Education Ministry.

D.S. Senanayake, Royal, Thurstan and Sri Sumangala (promoted to top tier), Vidyartha, Wesley, Zahira along with hosts St.Peter’s are local teams which will be in fray along with University of Technology Sydney and Gordon RFC from Australia, Bahrain RFC and Negeri Sembilan Rugby in Malaysia are four foreign teams.

These 12 teams will be slated in two groups with six teams in each group. Three groups games will be played on day one from 9 a.m. and the remaining group games will be staged on the final day.

The Cup, Bowl and the Plate championship will be played before the final of the Cup championship is to be played at 5 p.m. The organizers have decided to award a special trophy to the Most Valuable Player.

The matches will be officiated by the members of Sri Lanka Rugby Referees along with four foreign referees who have confirmed their presence to officiate.

The draw for this tournament is scheduled to be held on October 4 and the organizers have decided to open the gates free of charge which is likely to attract a fully packed stadium.
