Two arrested for mining sand illegally

The Kalutara Crimes Division has arrested two persons who were illegally digging the banks of the Kalu River near Kalutara Bodhi, together with two boats they had been using.

The Police said that two persons aged 32 and 21, residents of Palathota Kalutara, have been arrested.

The Police said further that a team of Police officers including Sub-Inspector K.M.D. Madushan, had carried out the raid on a tip-off received that sand miners were endangering the Kalutara Bodhi premises.

It is said that the suspects who had come in two boats had jumped into the river and fled when the Police team approached them while digging the bank of the river, however, the suspects were arrested after they were pursued in the water.

The Police said that two boats, a shovel, a mammoty, a rope have seized by them.
