Police said that two persons who were kidnapping a 37-year-old woman and her two children, aged 7 and 15 was arrested by a Police Sergeant who was on duty near the entrance of the Southern Expressway from Gelanigama.
Police said that the woman’s legal husband was among the two suspects arrested. Police had taken into custody a cleaver which had been in the possession of one of the suspects.
Panadura Division SSP Samantha Wedage said that after the death of the first husband of the abducted woman, she had spent time with a person illegally who had posed as her second husband and separated due to a grudge between the two.
Then she had legally got married to her third husband who was the main suspect and had been living in Talpe, Galle. Subsequently she had fallen out with the third husband as well and had
gone to live at Gungamuwa Bandaragama with her two children. While she was there, the main suspect had arrived in a car day before yesterday (7) morning, with a friend. He had threatened the woman and abducted her and the two children and taken them away in the vehicle he came in. He had stopped to buy a ticket for the Expressway in order to go to Matara when the Police
Sergeant had heard the woman screaming “Save me” at the top of her voice and taking action immediately he had halted the vehicle and arrested the suspects, the SSP said.
The suspects had been arrested and the woman and the two children had been saved by Police Sergeant Sujeewa (30076) of the Southern Expressway Traffic Police.
Police said that this incident had been the result of a family dispute.Subsequently, the two suspects and the vehicle they had come in as well as the cleaver had been handed over to the Bandaragama Police.
The Bandaragama Police is carrying out further investigations, under the directions of Panadura Division SSP Samantha Wedage and ASP Sampath Bandara.
