- Flood warning for Kelani river extended
The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) reported that two persons have been killed and 118,210 persons from 30,017 families were affected across 13 districts in the country due to severe weather conditions by yesterday evening (13). Gampaha District reported the most damages, with 68,672 individuals from 16,707 families affected.
The two deaths have been reported in the Millaniya area in Kalutara and Kaduwela areas.
225 houses have suffered partial damages, and several schools in Gampaha and Colombo Districts have been also closed following the severe weather conditions.
The Meteorology Department forecasts showers or thundershowers in Western, Sabaragamuwa, North-western, and Northern provinces, as well as in Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara-Eliya districts. Fairly heavy showers above 75mm are likely in some places. Showers or thundershowers are expected in several places elsewhere during the evening or night.
Level 2 landslide warnings have been issued to some areas in Colombo, Galle, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Nuwara Eliya, and Ratnapura Districts.
Meanwhile, the Irrigation Department has observed a decrease in water levels in Attanagalu oya, Gin Ganga, Kuda Ganga, and Kelani Ganga. However, the water level in Kalu Ganga is still at alert level.
Currently, 1,717 families, consisting of 6,876 individuals, are residing in 80 temporary shelters. Additionally, the Irrigation Department has extended the flood warning for the Kelani River Basin until 12.30 p.m. tomorrow (15).
Furthermore, in response to the ongoing adverse weather conditions, the Army forces have been advised to provide immediate relief to those affected and to assist the relevant authorities in disaster management efforts.
The President has instructed the Finance Ministry to allocate Rs. 50 million for relief services and urged state officials to ensure proper coordination in delivering relief to those in need during this period.
