Sri Lanka Police says negligence of duty by senior officers of the Sapugaskanda Police Station, including the OIC and the Traffic OIC, has been observed in the investigations into the collision involving former Speaker and NPP MP Ashoka Ranwala.

According to the Police Media Unit, the IGP has directed the Police Special Investigation Division to conduct a disciplinary investigation in this regard.

Issuing a statement, the Police Media said that on December 11, a jeep belonging to MP Ashoka Ranwala had collided with a motorcycle and a car near Denimulla Junction in Sapugaskanda.

Following the accident, on the orders of the IGP,  the Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of Traffic and Road Safety was ordered to conduct an inquiry into whether the Sapugaskanda Police officers had carried out their duties properly.

During this inquiry, it was observed that certain officers, including the Officer‑in‑Charge of the Sapugaskanda Police Station and senior supervisory officers, had neglected their responsibilities in handling the accident.

As a result, the IGP has instructed the Police Special Investigation Unit to initiate a preliminary investigation and take necessary action against the officers concerned. (Newswire)
