Two youths were arrested by the Pugoda Police on the charge of raping a 23-year-old woman and taking a 16-month-old baby hostage.

When they were presented to the Pugoda Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Magistrate Vinesh Ekanayake ordered them to be remanded until November 4.

According to the woman’s complaint, three youths entered the house when her husband had gone out to work. She said that they took the baby hostage and threatened to kill the baby by flinging it on the floor. Then they raped her, she said. Pugoda Police informed the court that another person was to be arrested and the suspect had already fled the area.

The two suspects aged 21 and 23 are residents of Pugoda Papilla and they have been remanded.

The woman is currently receiving treatment at Gampaha General Hospital and no medical reports have been received so far. The two suspects were produced before Judicial Medical Officer G.A Seneviratne. A senior officer of Pugoda Police said that the relevant medical report showed no signs that the suspects had raped the woman.

The senior official added that the woman who made the complaint had received treatment for a mental disorder a few months ago and her husband had given a statement to the police.

The Children and Women’s Bureau is conducting further investigations regarding this incident as per the instructions of Police Inspector Suresh De Silva, OIC of Pugoda Police Station.
