Actress Ruvini Tanasha was yesterday ordered to hand over the house in Colpetty area received as a gift from her grandmother, by the Colombo District Court. The accused actress was ordered to pay a
compensation of Rs.5 million and to pay Rs. 30,000 monthly to her grandmother until the property is legally handed over to her. The Colombo District Court issued this order ruling that the grandmother, who handed over the property to her granddaughter while holding the life estate, was treated disgracefully by her granddaughter.
Colombo Chief District Judge Poornima Paranagamage delivered this order after considering a case filed by grandmother Jayanthi Perera (72) against her granddaughter.
The District Judge has pointed out in her order that she was not only rude to the grandmother who gifted the property, but also testified disrespectfully while testifying before court.
She issued this decision stating that the complainant has well proved that the accused was treated with unkindness and ingratitude to the grandmother, instead of taking care of her with love and kindness.
The grandmother, who lived with her children in the Kollupitiya area of Colombo since 1972, handed over the relevant property to the actress defendant, the eldest grandchild of her family, in 2010, while holding life estate. Counsel who appeared for the plaintiff pointed out that following the property transfer, the accused had sent the grandmother out of the house and then did not even bother to find out whether the grandmother is there or not, and has stated that she has not even made a phone call to the grandmother.
Considering facts, the Colombo Chief District Court Judge ordered the property be handed back to the grandmother.
Attorney S.Janagan with Iraj de Silva appeared for the prosecution while Attorney Niranjan de Silva appeared for the defence under the instructions of Attorney Nalin Samarakoon.
