The ‘Urumaya’ programme grants land rights only to the lands given to the people by the British under the Waste Lands Ordinance of 1897, Land Commissioner General Bandula Jayasinghe stated. Speaking at a press conference held at the Government Information Department yesterday (17), Jayasinghe further said that no deeds will be given to new lands to the people under the ‘Urumaya’ programme.

He also said that it is planned to give land deeds for two million people under the ‘Urumaya’ programme and the programme is expected to be completed within the next two or three years.

He added that National Heritage Offices have been established throughout the island for the regularity of heritage programmes. They have also been established at Land Commissioner General, Provincial, Inter-Provincial, Divisional Secretariat, and Grama Niladari Office levels. If any problem arises, the people can contact them on 011 2 883 817; 0112 883 635; 0112 797 400; and 0112 865 824 or fax 0112 864 051.
