US imposes entry ban on 6 countries, partial limits on 15 others

The Trump administration has expanded the United States travel ban, adding six more countries to the list of nations whose citizens are barred from entering the country, including Syria and holders of travel documents issued by the Palestinian Authority, according to U.S. officials.

Under a presidential proclamation announced Tuesday, nationals of the newly added countries will face a full suspension of entry into the United States, while citizens of 15 other countries will be subject to partial restrictions, including limits on certain visa categories.

According to officials, the countries added to the full travel ban list include:

• Syria

• Afghanistan

• Myanmar

• Chad

• Republic of the Congo

• Holders of travel documents issued by the Palestinian Authority

In addition, partial travel and visa restrictions will apply to citizens of 15 other countries, including:

• Nigeria

• Angola

• Zambia

• Cameroon

• Ethiopia

• Ghana

• Ivory Coast

• Senegal

• Tanzania

• Uganda

• Zimbabwe

• Eritrea

• Sudan

• Sierra Leone

• Gambia

The administration said the decision was based on national security concerns, citing inadequate screening and vetting procedures, lack of cooperation in information sharing, and high rates of visa overstays in the affected countries.

White House officials said the measures are intended to strengthen border security and ensure that foreign nationals entering the United States meet strict safety standards. The restrictions are scheduled to take effect on Jan. 1, 2026.

The latest move expands a travel ban first introduced earlier this year and significantly increases the number of countries subject to U.S. entry restrictions.

Critics of the policy, including civil rights and immigrant advocacy groups, said the expanded ban unfairly targets people based on nationality and could disrupt families, students and workers with legitimate reasons to travel.

Administration officials said exemptions will apply to lawful permanent residents, existing visa holders, diplomats and certain other categories, though new visa applications from affected countries will face heightened scrutiny or denial. (Newswire)
