US issues travel advisory for Sri Lanka ahead of election

The U.S. Department of State has updated its travel advisory for Sri Lanka, urging citizens to exercise caution ahead in view of the upcoming presidential election.

The advisory highlights that demonstrations may occur before, during or after the election, scheduled for September 21, 2024.

Police have, in some cases, used water cannons and tear gas to disperse protests, and U.S. citizens are advised to avoid gatherings, even peaceful ones, as they can quickly turn violent, it stated.

The US State Department has advised the travellers to stay vigilant, particularly in tourist locations and crowded public venues, follow local authorities’ instructions, monitor local media for updates, and adjust plans as necessary to avoid crowds and demonstrations.
