The American Government will look forward to working with new President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and his administration to further strengthen bilateral ties including promoting economic growth, said US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Ambassador Julie J Chung.

Addressing the 32nd Annual General Meeting of the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) she said that they will also be supporting the country’s ongoing reform efforts.

“While congratulating new President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on his victory we look forward to working with him and his government toward a brighter, more stable future for all Sri Lankans.”

“We also welcome the new President and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya’s stated commitment to attracting new foreign direct investment (FDI). Her historic appointment marks a significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s political landscape and serves as a beacon of inspiration for young women across the country aspiring to leadership roles

“As Sri Lanka seeks to attract new FDI, it is essential to ensure transparency and uphold high standards for investors.”

“This will ensure that the investments create jobs, spur growth, and genuinely benefit Sri Lankans.  Moreover, a stable, transparent business environment will have a multiplier effect, incentivizing additional foreign investors, such as yourselves, to make significant and long-lasting investments.”

For starters, the United States remains Sri Lanka’s largest export market so building productivity and more capacity for exports will be key.

“AMCHAM and its membership will play an instrumental role in that growth and innovation and have a very timely opportunity to engage with the new President’s team toward his goals of achieving an inclusive economic recovery.”

“In this context, it is vital for Sri Lanka to stick to the IMF program, especially focusing on the good governance diagnostics, reforming inefficient State-Owned Enterprises, and intensifying anti-corruption efforts.  These steps are fundamental to building a robust and transparent economy. Our partnership seeks to strengthen Sri Lanka’s inclusive economy and support its prosperity.”

“By delivering cutting-edge technology, supporting innovative projects, and offering educational opportunities, the United States is helping to build a stronger economy and a more stable future for Sri Lanka.”

“One shining example of this collaboration is Microsoft’s pilot program introducing artificial intelligence in Sri Lankan education.

Looking ahead, expanding economic growth will continue to be an essential goal for Sri Lanka.  “U.S. companies can and should lead the way forward.”

“We must continue this, along with our efforts at empowering women as future leaders in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka now has its third female Prime Minister, a shining example for many young girls.”

“The road ahead will not be easy, but the United States Government and the private sector stand as Sri Lanka’s partners, ready to help.  Together, we can navigate any storm and steer toward a horizon filled with promise and opportunity.” (SS)

“Lanka much like Amazon poised for significant growth”

Sri Lanka is much like the Amazon company of the United States in its early days and is poised for significant growth, the ambassador said, sharing an inspirational story from the United States.

“By thinking creatively and embracing innovation, Sri Lankan businesses can expand beyond traditional boundaries.”

In 1994, Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in a modest garage in Seattle.  “What began as an online bookstore soon transformed into a global e-commerce giant, revolutionizing the way the world shops.  Amazon’s journey is a testament to American innovation and leadership—constantly pushing boundaries, embracing challenges, and reimagining what’s possible.”

The irony lies in the fact that while Amazon encourages thinking outside the box, all their magic arrives inside boxes.  “Their success didn’t come from abandoning traditional concepts but from reinventing them to meet modern needs. This approach reflects the innovative spirit that drives progress, a spirit that both the United States and Sri Lanka can harness to achieve great things. Just as Amazon transformed retail, Sri Lanka has the potential to make groundbreaking strides in various industries.”
