For the first time in Sri Lanka a local consortium headed by Access Engineering PLC (AEL) will invest USD 6. 5 million towards the establishment of a Cyclotron based Radiopharmaceutical production facility.

This will be on a Build, Operate and Own basis. (BOO). The agreement in this regard was signed on November 5 between Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board (SLAEB) together with the Ministry of Health (MoH) and Access Medical Tracers (Private) limited (Special Purpose Vehicle) for the implementation of this production facility.

This is the first time such a facility is developed in the country to produce Fluoro – Deoxy’ – Glucose (FDC) which is required for the purpose of cancer detection.

The resulting nuclear reaction makes the non-radioactive materials radioactive isotopes, which are then used to create radiopharmaceuticals. The share holders of this ground breaking project are Access Engineering PLC (AEL) taking 60% share Access International (Private) Limited (20% ) and both Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board (SLAEB) and Ministry of Health (MoH) taking 10% each. The groundbreaking ceremony of this historic venture will be held on November 8, 2024.
