The United Workers’ Community Plantation Workers’ Union (UWCPW) pledged to back President Ranil Wickremesinghe in the upcoming Presidential Election, according to the union’s chairman, Shanmugan Thiruchelvam.
Thiruchelvam stated at a media briefing held in Kahawatta that after meeting with representatives of the President at the Sirikotha headquarters,
the union expressed its support for President Wickremesinghe. He also noted that the union, along with the broader plantation community in the Ratnapura and Nuwara Eliya districts, would take all necessary steps to ensure President Wickremesinghe receives their support.
During the briefing, Thiruchelvam further stated:”The people in the plantation areas have a clear understanding of President Ranil Wickremesinghe. He is not a leader who makes false promises; he is a leader with a plan and policy, focused on the country’s well-being. It is because of the President that the country was saved from crisis.
“We have decided to take this opportunity to work towards President Wickremesinghe’s victory in the Presidential Election. As the largest plantation workers’ organisation in the Ratnapura District, and as an organisation representing plantation people in other districts, we are committed to ensuring his success.
“The President has paid special attention to the plantation workers in the past, and we trust that he will continue to make the necessary decisions for the benefit of the plantation community.”
