Van smashes into shop killing cyclist in Ja-Ela

A cycling champion has died due to an accident caused by a van that smashed the huge electronic Mahapola advertisement hoarding erected in Ja-Ela.

This accident took place yesterday (17) morning. According to the Police, a bus transporting office workers from Colombo to Katunayake broke the huge electronic Mahapola billboard erected at the main entrance of Ja-Ela Mahapola and collided with a nearby gas outlet.There, a cycling champion, who was waiting nearby collided with the bus.

An eyewitness said that the van came at a high speed and hit the billboard, a car nearby, and collided with a gas outlet. The driver of the van told the Police that he could not control the vehicle because the brakes of the vehicle were off. The deceased person is a 29-year-old resident of Kandana in area.

Relatives of the deceased said that he left his house in the morning for cycling training.

It is also revealed that the deceased person married eight months ago and his wife is pregnant.

The driver of the van and several others were injured and admitted to Ragama Hospital for treatment.The body of the deceased has been kept at the Ragama Hospital for a post-mortem.
