Vehicle stickers promoting Presidential candidates to be removed – EC Chairman
Election Commission Chairman R.M.A.L. Ratnayake said that all types of material promoting any Presidential candidates pasted or displayed on any private vehicles should be removed immediately.
The Election Commission Chairman stated that it is an offence under Section 74 of the Election of the President Act No. 15 of 1981 to display such material on private vehicles to promote individual Presidential candidates and their political parties violating election laws at a time when the election of the President has been announced. He said that the Election Commission has received complaints over such incidents taking place.
The Election Commission has received complaints about the display of signs, symbols, stickers with photos and flags promoting Presidential candidates and political parties on private vehicles including private buses and three-wheelers. The Election Commission has also instructed the Police to carry out emergency inspections covering all Police jurisdictions to remove such promotional material of candidates displayed on private vehicles.
In the meantime, the Election Commission has given instructions to all the Presidential candidates on Monday at a special meeting convened at the Election Commission office, not to create any riotous incidents at a time when the election campaigning in the country has become very intense. The Election Commission has further instructed the candidates not to violate election laws.
Candidates have been also advised by the Election Commission that if no Presidential candidate gets more than 50 percent, the second preference votes will have to be counted and therefore, to ensure not to create or engage in any riotous incidents during that time.
The special meeting convened by the Election Commission was attended by all the representatives of the Presidential candidates on behalf of them to provide these instructions to them.
