Veteran journalist Nandasena Sooriyaarachchi passes away

Veteran journalist and book author Nandasena Sooriyaarachchi passed away. He was 78. For more than 50 years, he has worked as an editorial staffer for many newspapers including the Dinamina, Silumina, Divaina, and Rivira and he has authored about 55 books.

Born on March 27, 1945 in Baddegama Unanvitiya, Southern Province, Nandasena Sooriyaarachchi studied at Weliwitiya Maha Vidyalaya, Galle Vidyaloka Maha Vidyalaya and Horana Vidyaratne Vidyalaya and entered the Kelaniya University.

In 1966, he entered the field of literature by winning the inter-university short story competition. In 1967, he held the position of the chief editor of the university’s student union and in the same year, he held the position of vice president of the university’s freedom party student union. Nandasena Sooriyaarachchi, who worked as a newspaper writer since his university days, entered his professional career as the featured editor of ‘Udaya’ newspaper in 1969. He joined the Lake House in 1969 and worked for 12 years on the editorial board of ‘Dinamina’ and ‘Silumina’. In 1981, he joined the founding editorial board of ‘Divaina’ newspaper of Upali newspaper company and worked there for about 13 years. He excelled in political articles, art and feature writing.

Suriyarachchi, who has written biographies, reviews and novels as a book author, wrote nearly 55 books. His cortege has been kept at No.9, Kashyapa Road, Anderson Road, Kalubowila. Last rites will be held at the Kohuwala Public Cemetery on Saturday (30) evening.
