Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya said the country’s general laws apply to disputes between ride-hailing services such as PickMe and Uber and traditional three-wheeler operators.
His comments follow protests and clashes that erupted in several parts of the country after a dispute between a PickMe-registered driver and three-wheeler drivers in Ella in December 2025, which led to incidents of public disorder.
The police chief summoned representatives of three-wheeler owners’ associations and officials from ride-hailing companies, including PickMe and Uber, for discussions at police headquarters.
He said the primary duty of the Sri Lanka Police is to maintain public order, and warned that criminal acts such as violence, threats or intimidation would be dealt with under the law, regardless of institutional or union disputes. (Newswire)
