“I have no intention of preventing anyone from going on the Sri Pada pilgrimage. There is no law against it. Visiting Sri Pada during off season is not encouraged but university students and individuals from various institutions can visit Sri Pada during the off-season without any issues,”
Chief Incumbent of Sripadasthana and Chief Sanghanayake of the Ratnapura district Most Ven.Bengamuwe Dhammadinna Thera said.
The Thera is also the Chief incumbent of the Pelmadulla Rajamaha Vihara and Ratnapura Pothgul Rajamaha Vihara. He made these remarks during a special discussion held on Tuesday (13) at the Pelmadulla Divisional Secretariat, marking the end of this year’s Siripada season and Perahara activities.
Further commenting on the challenges, he noted, “During the off-season, roads lack basic facilities, including electricity. Additionally, there are no support teams such as Police officers or health workers available, which means there is no protection for pilgrims. This poses a serious risk if someone falls ill. Last year, Rs.two million was spent to repair damages to water pipes, cisterns and toilets caused by off-season visitors. Unfortunately, due to the lack of teams to clear waste, including non-biodegradable materials, significant environmental damage was caused. “The off-season is a crucial period for local wildlife to adapt to their environment.
If pilgrimages to Sripada occur during this time, it disrupts the natural habitat of trees and animals.
Therefore, those wishing to visit Sripada during the off-season must seek permission from the Ratnapura District Secretary. While this is not a formal regulation, it is a heartfelt request,”he said referring to various media and social media as sources spreading misnformation.
