Voters can only cast their ballot at polling station on polling card: EC
The Election Commission (EC) flatly refuted the information circulating alleging that voters can cast their vote at any polling station in the country.
The Election Commission further emphasised that no one is allowed to vote in a polling station other than the polling station mentioned in the voter’s polling card. Accordingly, voters registered in the voters’ list will not be facilitated to cast their vote at any polling station in the island. Issuing a statement, Elections Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake refuted these reports and said that voters must vote at the polling station assigned to their registered constituency only, as per election regulations.
“False news is circulating in the media and social media that registered voters in the electoral registry will be facilitated to vote in any polling station in the island at the Presidential Election to be held on September 21,” the media release from the EC said.
According to the election rules and regulations, one can vote only at the polling station belonging to the constituency in which the voter is registered as a voter to cast his or her vote. A postal voter can also cast his or her vote in the presence of the Certifying Officer at his or her office.
All registered voters in the voter registry will receive the official polling card by post, which will include the name of the voter, the polling station where they can cast their vote, and the date and time of polling. No one is allowed to vote at a polling station other than the polling station mentioned in the official polling card.
Therefore, the Election Commission requested all voters not to be fooled by such false news and go to the polling station mentioned in the official polling card and cast their vote.
