Vouchers for schoolgirls to buy sanitary napkins begins

The Education Ministry will provide vouchers for schoolgirls to buy sanitary napkins based on the allocation of one billion rupees.

The programme of supplying free vouchers for adult schoolgirls to purchase sanitary napkins will be implemented from this month.

The inauguration of handing over the gift voucher programme, which has been implemented with an investment of one billion rupees, took place at President’s Girls’ College in Nawala yesterday (6). Accordingly, the Education Ministry has taken steps to provide free vouchers to purchase sanitary napkins for six months beginning from June. A gift voucher worth Rs. 1,200 each will be given to female students.

The Education Ministry has already organised the necessary moves to hand over the gift vouchers to the female students through schools, in which the students learn.

Out of the total student population of Sri Lanka, measures have been taken to provide these gift vouchers to all the adult female students of seven national schools in the estate school category and all the adult female students of provincial school category.

Sanitary napkins can be purchased using these gift vouchers from a retail shop registered with the Education Ministry. However it is the responsibility of the students to purchase quality sanitary napkins certified by the Sri Lanka Standards Institute (SLSI) as quality hygienic product.

The respective gift voucher given to female students has two parts as part A and part B. Each part values Rs 600 each amounting to Rs.1,200. Part ‘A’ should be used first and its validity period is from June 10, 2024 to July 10, 2024.

The other part ‘B’ can be used during the period between September 1, 2024 to September 30, 2024. Sanitary napkins must be purchased within those time limits.

The Education Ministry has implemented this sanitation programme with the aim of providing facilities that help children’s personality development and healthy well-being, which is an essential factor for the successful maintenance of the learning-teaching process in schools.

This is expected to encourage school attendance of female students and prevent adverse situations such as lack of proper attention for education due to problems and health ignorance they face during the economic season.
