The Water-Cutting ceremony, marking the conclusion of the Kandy Esala Perahera festival, was held yesterday (20) at dawn at the Getambe water-cutting port, in accordance with ancient rituals.
After the final grand procession- Maha Randoli Perahera concluded, the Dalada Maligawa Perahera travelled to the Asgiriya Aadahana Maluwa and Gedige Vihara, where the casket containing the Relic was deposited.
Subsequently, the four major Dewala Peraheras went to Getambe Diyakapana Thota and performed the Water-Cutting rituals, where thousands of people gathered to witness this ceremony.
Taking the ‘kap’ set up at the four major Dewalas marking the beginning of the Perahera festival, are taken to the Mahaweli River and released into the water to float away, which is an ancient tradition.
After performing the water-cutting ceremony, the four major temple processions arrive at the Pulleyar Kovil in Kandy. Following the rituals there, the daytime Perahera commences.
