0 10

Central Province Irrigation Engineer Dinesh Sumanasekara said that around eight millimetres of water evaporates daily from the Victoria and Randenigala reservoirs due to the prevailing high temperatures.

He further mentioned that although 88% of the total capacity of the main reservoirs, which supply water for the Minipe irrigation campaign, is currently available, the risk of water shortage for agricultural activities in the future exists due to evaporation.

These comments were made by the irrigation engineer while addressing representatives of farmers’ organizations during a seasonal meeting held at the Minipe Divisional Secretariat. He emphasized that it is the responsibility of farmers

to comprehend this situation and utilize water with proper management techniques. Additionally, he highlighted that a significant amount of water may be lost due to evaporation caused by high temperatures and the absorption of water into dry ground.

The meeting was chaired by Kandy District Secretary Chandana Tennakoon. It was attended by Matale Additional District Secretary, F.R.M. Rialdeen; Kandy Additional District Secretary, Nilusha Bulathge; Minipe Acting Divisional Secretary, Nuwan Hemakumara; Wilgamuwa Divisional Secretary, D.M.T.U. Dissanayake; as well as S.H.L.Dayapala, the Minipe Residential Business Manager and others.
