This election campaign has become highly heated, not because of substantive reasons, but because the focus has shifted from policy discussions and debates to mudslinging, slander, and lies, said Wasantha Samarasinghe.
Addressing a rally held in Anuradhapura on Saturday (14) he further said, “Now, Ranil Wickremesinghe is telling people that there will be no more discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the agreements with them cannot be renegotiated, and it’s impossible to negotiate if the National People’s Power (NPP) comes to power. He also claims that debt restructuring is not feasible and the NPP can do nothing about it.
“However, the IMF itself has stated that they are prepared to disburse the next installment of funds to Sri Lanka after discussions with whoever the newly elected Government is. They have also clarified that they have no discussion regarding foreign debt restructuring, as it is a matter between the borrowing country and the lending countries or companies.
“Despite this, some people continue to claim that those without international ties cannot negotiate with the IMF, and saying that the IMF will reject them. But the IMF itself has declined all these claims.
“We have already had five rounds of discussions with the IMF. We expressed our concerns about certain taxes and the need for discussion and amendmen.
