We will provide all facilities to uplift Sri Lanka sports in 2024 as we have Olympic and Paralympic as well as World Cup T- 20 cricket tournament as well as Asian Netball Championships in UAE which are our main targets said Sports Director General Rt Rear Admiral Dr. Shemal Fernando with an exclusive interview yesterday.
Sports Development Department received 2600 million rupees from the Government and we plan to distribute this money according to the plans during 2024.
Last year we had 80 million rupees for National sports Games but this year we have increased that amount .In addition 300 million for International Sports events while 100 million for Kreeda Shakthi Programme and another 100 million for low level International events and 100 million for High Performance Unit activities and these are very important areas to look after Sports Development Department said Sports Director Dr. Shemal Fernando.To focus on next France Olympics there are 16 players including two players who are in overseas training who are our medal prospects added Sports Director General.
The key players from various sports such as Athletics ,Weight lifting, Badminton Gymnastics are the focus and we have to make plans and get approval as Road to Olympics and this is important areas in. Sports Developent under Sports Ministry headed by Sports Minister Harin Fernando and Secretary K.Mahesan are key figures in thesel projects to develop sport. National Sports Council and National Selection Committee are backing these programmes and we are doing it systematically said Sports Director General Dr Shemal Fernando.
High Performance Unit is very vital while we got funds from Government budget and we have responsibility how to use this money.
We already suspended four sports bodies and hope to hold their AGM to appoint new officials and sports Minister already give instructions to hold these elections soon. Sports Minister always very keen to see more International tournaments here in Sri Lanka for Tourist promotion during this hard period, he said.
