Wife tips off on Sergeant’s illegal firearm after dispute

A Police Sergeant in possession of a 16-bore firearm without a licence was arrested on Wednesday (9) evening by the officers of the Seethawaka Division Crimes Investigation Bureau, on a tip off given by his wife. The Sergeant attached to the Kollupitiya Police was arrested. A senior police officer said there was a family dispute between the Sergeant and his wife. The officer also said that the wife had made a written complaint to the Defence Ministry that the police husband was trying to kill her by shooting her with a firearm.

According to a notification from the Defence Ministry, the Seethawaka Division Crimes Investigation Bureau had conducted an investigation and inspected the house in Amithirigala Medagoda, where this officer resides, on Wednesday 9.

Police said that the 16-bore firearmwas found and accordingly the Police Sergeant was arrested. This Sergeant was to be produced before the Avissawella Magistrate’s Court. A disciplinary inquiry has also been initiated against this officer.
